Budapest Declaration - AJBH-EN
On 16-17 December 2024, the Ombudsman for Future Generations initiated a conference with other ombudsperson institutions from the region to discuss the importance and possibilities to protect a safe climate and thriving planet for future generations. The outcome of the conference, the Budapest Declaration on the Role of Ombuds Institutions in Protecting the Needs of Future Generations, can be found in the Declaration document.
The Declaration emphasizes that ombuds institutions have a vital role and unique toolkit to protect the long-term interests of future generations on the domestic level even when they do not have an express constitutional mandate to protect environmental rights and/or future generations. The Declaration sets out the main principles and useful approaches to fostering a sustainable and liveable planet for present and future generations.
The Declaration aspires to be useful for any ombuds type institution, which engages in future generations advocacy or is currently planning to create such a portfolio.
Signatories also invite all other ombuds institutions to join the Declaration.
Interested institutions are encouraged to reach out to the Office of the Ombudsman for Future Generations of Hungary to express their interest in joining the Declaration by sending an email to this address: jnho@ajbh.hu.
