null VI. Transylvanian Lawyers' Assembly, Târgu Mures

The Minority Ombudsman and her colleagues participated in the 6th Transylvanian Lawyers' Meeting, organised by the Institute of Law of the Faculty of Law of Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania Cluj-Napoca and the Hungarian Lawyers' Association of Transylvania.

The event, which is of great importance for the Hungarian legal community in Transylvania, was postponed several times due to the pandemic and took place between 10-12 September 2021, this year in Târgu Mures. In addition to presentations analysing the current issues and challenges of European, Romanian and Hungarian legislation and judiciary, the event also plays an important role in maintaining professional contacts and exchanging experience between lawyers from the Carpathian Basin.

Minority Ombudsman Elisbeth Sándor-Szalay has been invited to the event for years, and the organisers considered her participation and professional contribution important in 2021 as well. Her presentation entitled "Practical experiences with hate speech and hate-motivated acts - from an ombudsman perspective", held jointly with Tamás Török, Head of the Secretariat, put hate crime atrocities in a historical context to understand current problems and discussed the possibilities and results of ombudsman tools and procedures.

The presentations by experts and analysts representing a wide range of legal fields covered the situation of national minorities, current cases before the Romanian Constitutional Court, European data protection trends, Hungarian and Romanian company law regulations, certain rules on international claims collection and enforcement, and the material, personal and territorial jurisdiction of the European Public Prosecutor's Office. In addition to a wide range of presentations, the conference's professional programme was enriched by book presentations, professional forums and round tables.


 

Since 2015, the Transylvanian Lawyers' Assembly has provided an ongoing opportunity for Hungarian lawyers to examine current issues of European, Romanian and Hungarian legislation and judiciary, and to consult in a structured way on the future of legal education, with the involvement of academics, leading public officials and practitioners from different professional groups.
